Longtime Steubenville Assistant Baseball Coach
Joe Pierro, known to generations of Steubenville, Ohio students and athletes as “Coach P,” died September 4.
Pierro had retired only about three weeks before his death. Steubenville City Schools said in a statement that Pierro “was a longtime teacher, coach, colleague and friend,” adding that “the Big Red family suffered a tremendous loss with Pierro's sudden passing.”
Hours after news of Pierro's death spread, the Steubenville High School varsity football team dedicated its game to him and defeated Linsly School 48-7, moving to 3-0 on the season, according to The Intelligencer. Pierro had served as a longtime assistant football coach for the Big Red program in addition to his work with the baseball team. His death also prompted an outpouring on social media, with community members posting that they were heartbroken over the loss.Pierro was part of a Steubenville baseball program under head coach Fred Heatherington that compiled 627 wins, 14 Ohio Valley Athletic Conference titles, six regional championships, and six state Final Four appearances, according to Big Red Baseball. He is survived by a daughter. His family requested in his obituary that memorial donations be made directly to Steubenville High School to honor his legacy and support local students, according to CBS News.
