Franklin High School

Doug Long-2012 Hof-bwDoug graduated from Germantown High School in Germantown, Ohio. He received such honors as membership in the National Honor Society, All State in football, and All League in football and baseball. He has a B.S. in Education from Eastern Kentucky University and a Masters Degree in counseling from Xavier University.

He began his teaching career at Franklin High School, where he retired 30 years later in 2001. He taught Industrial Arts and coached football, basketball, and baseball. His career accomplishments in baseball include a career record of 504 wins and 256 losses, for a 663% win percentage. He was the co-founder of the Warren County Baseball Tournament, in which Franklin won 9 county titles. Other accomplishments include 9 Mid-Miami League titles, 3 District Championships, 1 Regional Runner- up, and All-Time Winningest Coach of the Mid-Miami League. He also coached twice in the All-Ohio Series. After his retirement from Franklin, he served 2 years as assistant coach with Ron Nischwitz at Wright State University.

During his career at Franklin High School, he was recognized several times as Miami Valley Baseball Coach of the Year and Mid-Miami League Coach of the Year 8 times. He was elected to the Miami Valley Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Franklin High School Hall of Fame. He has sent over 50 of his players on to play college baseball, 3 of which signed professional contracts.

Doug has also served as President of the Miami Valley Coaches Association. He has been instrumental and still speaks and participated with youth clinics in southwest Ohio. He was camp instructor at the University of Michigan and Wright State University. He was also Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Franklin for 24 years. His daughter Julie Byerly was a recipient of the OHBCA Scholarship Award. His son Jake went on to play college baseball and is currently the head baseball coach at Miamisburg High School.

His wife of 41 years, Eve, is currently Administrative Assistant at the SouthWest Ohio Computer Association. Their daughter Julie, an Ohio University graduate, is married to Brent Byerly and has two children, Seth and Emma. Son Jake, a Wright State University graduate, is married to Trisha and has three children, Tyson, Jaxon, and Sidney.

Coach Long is retired, living on a small farm in Eaton, Ohio and enjoys hunting and spending time with his 5 grandchildren and family.
