Ken Gray - 2011
Mason High School
Ken Gray is a 1966 graduate of Greenhills High School in Greenhills, Ohio. Ken lettered 4 years in baseball and 3 years in football at Greenhills. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1970. Ken worked at Railway Express from 1966 to 1972. Mr. Gray decided teaching and coaching were in his blood, and he obtained a teaching certificate from Xavier University. He obtained a master’s degree from Miami University in 1981. In 1966, Ken was selected to the WSAI High School Hall of Fame. In 1987, he was selected to Buddy Larosa’s High School Hall of Fame. Ken has won numerous coaches’ awards and in 1987 was the Cincinnati Post Coach of the Year.
Ken began his teaching and coaching career at Mason High School in 1972. Ken has coached baseball, football, cross country, golf and basketball at Mason. Ken has been the Head Coach of baseball, golf and cross country. Ken became baseball coach at Mason High School in 1975. In his 36 years as coach, the Comets have compiled 707 wins and 296 losses. In addition, they have won 14 conference titles, 16 sectional championships, 7 district titles, 7 regional appearances, and 1 regional championship. The 1987 squad was State Runner-Up.
All of the success Coach Gray and the Comets have enjoyed over the seasons has been attributed to outstanding assistant coaches and players at all levels. Coach Gray has been fortunate to coach with only two groups of assistants at the Varsity level in his 36 year tenure. Coaches Randy and Charlie Andrews served from 1981–2007, and there are the current coaches Curt Bly and Kyle Peters. Coach Gray has also had the privilege to coach outstanding student athletes at Mason with over 250 going on to play at the next level.
Coach Gray retired from teaching at Mason City Schools in 2008 after 36 years. Coach Gray continues to coach at Mason High School. He would like to thank the excellent administrators and athletic department staff he has been fortunate enough to work for at Mason City Schools. He is presently teaching a Senior Internship class at Little Miami High School.
Coach Gray is the proud parent of three children: Brian, a graduate of Union College in Kentucky, Amie, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and Brent, a graduate of Wright State University. Both of Coach Gray’s sons played for him. Coach Gray resides on the Nicklaus Golf Course in Mason, Ohio and is an avid golfer.
